History & Context

The Transparency Project started in 2017 after JTR Presents finished a previous project, "_______hood", which explored identity in different scales. During this time, there were several "red flags" that occurred including the 45th president's executive order to dismiss Trans soldiers from duty and to ban trans civilians from enrollment. To the curator of this project, this seemed to be another case of how the representation of a people can affect their reality through the actions of people in power who perceive them based on what they are represented as.

In this idea of representation and how it affects one's reality, Jordan T. Robinson and Lara Americo explored ways the Arts can be used as a platform for the community to be empowered by telling their story and who they are in their own voice and how the community can support them.

Ways To Participate:

If you are a person who is Transgender, Non-Binary, 2-Spirit, Non-Gender-Conforming, Intersex, Agender, or any other gender-expansive identity, we encourage you to take part in this project through the following options:

If you are cisgender, or not of the identities aforementioned, you are also welcome to contribute, however, we are prioritizing Gender-Expansive artists and community members. You can also support through donations as we need to raise funds to pay the artists involved in some of the programming that is currently being made around this exhibition.

Come Discuss with us!

This is an opportunity for the community and its leaders to view a sample of the exhibition before joining in a dialogue on the themes of the exhibition. This is an opportunity for the public to openly engage and share experiences that connect to the artwork. This is also a time to discuss on the rhetorical questions mentioned in the exhibition description:

• What defines you and the facets of your identity?

• Who has a say in your narrative?

• What do you think truly has the power to define us?

• What does loving others as yourself look like to you?

The goal of this event is to recognize and empower our community's transgender and gender-expansive members. It is also linked to the Transparency project, a cultural arts center art display intended to elevate the artists and community.

This is an exhibition focused on representation and its effects on the reality of a community. We are focusing on the Transgender community as the subject as they are a current example. Transparency is to provide a platform for the community to tell North Carolinians who they are in THEIR own voice and stories using art and design.

As part of the project, we are collecting artwork from Artists, and recording the stories, messages, and voices of members of the Transgender and Non-Binary community and their allies.
