Sara Westermark lives in Wilmington, North Carolina where she draws inspiration from nature, and experiments with design, color and texture in her jewelry. Although her formal training is in classical singing, Sara divides her time between teaching private studio lessons and making jewelry. She holds a Bachelor and a Master's Degrees in Music in Voice Performance from the University of Missouri in Columbia. Sara is a self-taught metalsmith and has won top prizes from local and regional art festivals. Her jewelry has been published in several books by Lark, namely “Jewelry Design Project,” ”30-Minute Necklaces,” “30-Minute Rings,” and “Ring a Day 2010.” In 2010, she co-curated an exhibit on the Ring a Day Project by Etsymetal for the 2011 Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) at their annual conference.
Artist Statement
“Armor of Inclusivity” by Sara Westermark Vitreous Enamel on copper, leather, thread 18” x 24” x 4” Weighs 10.5 lbs 2019 “Armor of Inclusivity” is a love letter to Alex my nonbinary, bisexual young adult child. After the 2016 elections and the North Carolina Bathroom Laws, I could no longer be quiet. Ultimately I was inspired by a biblical text from Ephesians that implored people to wear God’s love like armor and go into the world with love in spite of judgment, hate, and persecution. I want to wrap my child in the protective armor of Love. Love for all people- cis, LGBTQIA, black, white, citizen, immigrant, disabled, veteran, Muslim, Christian, Jewish, and Atheist. The rainbow is more beautiful with many colors. Life is more beautiful when we all bring our unique gifts and talents to serve our neighbors.
