Description from the Artist:
Mx. Liberty is a series that is part of a larger body of work focused on Nationality and Identity. A Black Woman is one of several pieces in the series as she has been the backbone of the country's founding and culture. This is an homage to the unsung heroesses who looked after the men and children while doing the heavy work themselves.
"This country was built off slave labor. Slaves of African descent primarily and mostly. Without the "cheap labor" the United States would not have had the resources nor the equity to be the country it is today. When I think of America, 'What is it to be American?' or 'What is American Identity?' I think of Emma Lazarus' poem "The New Colossus". The first 'American' symbol people see when they immigrate to the US. With an all-inclusive poem as the message on the Statue's base, I think of the statue of liberty as the personification and mascot of the United States. If this is the case, then why not have our mascot posterchild shown in many different incarnations of identities that make up this country.
After all, it is a salad bowl, rather than a melting pot. Each culture, like an ingredient, is part of the larger dish but still retains its identity even when partially cooked. In a melting pot, everything melts and mingles until it is no longer itself."
