Bio

Johan Astratha Eskew is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker whose practice centers on visual storytelling, memory, and emotional interiority. Originally trained in graphic design and art education at North Carolina A&T State University, Eskew’s work bridges disciplines, combining design, film, and narrative to explore the complexities of lived experience.

Eskew began his creative career working across visual arts before turning his focus toward filmmaking in 2007, using the medium to expand his interest in storytelling and human connection. He later continued his studies at the London Film School, where he developed his voice as a director and writer, producing work that reflects both personal reflection and broader social themes. His filmography includes projects spanning narrative and documentary forms, with a consistent emphasis on introspection, identity, and psychological depth.

Across his practice, Eskew is particularly interested in how individuals process and communicate experiences that are often difficult to articulate. His work frequently engages themes of mental health, vulnerability, and survival, positioning storytelling as both a reflective and transformative act. Whether through film or visual composition, he creates environments in which emotional expression becomes visible, offering audiences a space to encounter the internal landscapes that shape human experience.

In addition to his creative work, Eskew has expressed a strong commitment to community engagement and mentorship, seeking to use his practice not only to tell stories, but to create opportunities for others and contribute to a broader culture of artistic exchange.
